Papercraft: Final Revision

Image
For this week we worked on our final version of our papercraft object. After feedback from the class, I (naturally) decided to redesign Bonnie all over again. I felt that there were lots of things to be improved upon and that overall my design didn't look like Bonnie all that much. So, I directly referenced a photo of Bonnie and drew out a flat version of my final design.  I then inserted this image into rhino to reference while making the new concept. Sadly, a few of the details i wanted to add didn't work out so I didn't add an indentation to the mouth, and I couldn't find a material that I felt was good enough to create the eyes that I wanted.  Overall, i was satisfied with the new design, as I simplified it a lot, but I think all the changes made work better and look cleaner than the last. The process this time around was much easier thanks to having sturdier paper, larger tabs, and less pieces. I actually had a lot of fun making this and seeing the final result is...

Paper Craft: Printed Templates

Image
For this week we had to fully assemble our first prototype of our papercraft design. I enjoyed scoring and cutting all the various pieces but gluing everything together? Not my cup of tea. I found through my process of gluing it all together that I had made my shapes too complex, and having so many sides and angles to a piece was very hard to work with, especially when gluing by hand. I had to slightly alter some pieces as now that they were unfolded, there were slight gaps and the paper wouldn't line up.  The first altercation was to fix the top tabs on the main headpiece and on the top ear pieces. The mouth piece when printed had some issues as well, the top separate piece no longer lined up with the main part of the mouth, for the prototype I just cut some of the paper away, but I will probably simplify how many angles there are in certain areas. The nose turned out fine but the eyes I realized were much too complex and were extremely hard to glue down onto the head later ...

Papercraft Objects: Printed Templates

Image
For this assignment I ended up refining one of my ten originals into a much more complex shape thanks to being shown a great method in class, where using polygons to create more rounded appearing objects. Since I decided to remodel one of my objects, there aren't a ton of details going on within the work, but I do want to add many through single layers of paper stacked on each other for the final.  I liked this new shape much more than the previous design, and giving the head the dome shaped eyes I think makes it sort of creepy as well. I want to take this another step further though and possibly add a movable jaw, and make this to scale to fit my head. As this first prototype isn't big enough because I made it so the largest head piece fit on one page of paper, but to fit y head it'll have to be a fair amount larger, so I'll try to figure out the scaling for that. I'm decently satisfied with how the prints look and I'm really looking forward to cutting and pas...

PAPERCRAFT OBJECTS: DIGITAL SAMPLES

Image
For this assignment, we had to create a minimum of 10 papercraft samples, all which had to be items that held some significance to us.  1) Nintendo Switch Controller I think if I were to go even further with this one, I would like to make the full switch and have the controllers be able to slide in and out of the sides like a real one. 2) Safety Pin Safety pins hold a lot of meaning to me and its something I would like to get a tattoo of. 3) Keropi Mat One of my close friends owns a keropi bath mat and I wanted to include it because of how often I see it, and how it makes me think of them. 4) Vending Machine I currently live in the dorms at SAIT, so there are plenty of vending machines that constantly tempt me. 5) Lava Lamp When I was younger I used to own about 3 lava lamps and I had them all lined up on my dresser.  6) Bonnie Mask Because of quarantine, I fell back into my old interests and rewatched a lot of FNAF videos, and I still honestly enjoy this game a lot and ...

Papercraft: Research

Image
Right off the bat I decided on focusing on Hari & Deepti, as that type of papercraft has been one I've always admired. They make paper cut light boxes, using water color paper, they layer the work and use LED lights to backlight their pieces. Most of their works play off the use of the colored lights, as they include flames, stars, planets, city lights, etc. Their work is so full of storytelling and imagination. They create full on worlds with their papercraft and create such detailed beautiful works. As I understand their work, there are common themes in certain pieces, such as the hunters we can see in the distance in the work pictured above. Mainly, each piece can stand alone and carry its story through its one image. The way their works appear when backlit is strikingly different from when there is no light on the piece.   Each piece has an immense amount of depth that we don't recognize when it is lit. Each layer provides a new shade, a new color, without there ...

Mesh Mashup: HD Renders

Image
For this project I ended up changing my object. I did this because after learning how to use all these programs I figured I could do a better job the second time around, plus I was somewhat disappointed with my last object and the quality of my work. With this new object I think it looks much more refined and clean than my previous object. I chose to do my Easter egg island object, but when I got to refining it in mesh mixer I added more objects to create a small story to the work. This also allowed me to play with more materials when hd rendering in rhino. I added a giant crab and a tiny little cat stretching on the beach chair. Since the island is in an egg holder, its like its the giant crabs breakfast. I also played with materials a lot, and applied textures that wouldn't normally be used on the objects. Overall, I'm much happier with this work than my previous one and I hope that the improvement shows well.  I had a fun time playing with light and all the different textu...

Mesh Mashup: Refinement

Image
For this week we chose 1 out of our past 10 objects and refined it. Thanks to feedback from classmates, I decided to go with my little duck police officer. Feedback from peers gave me a whole new concept idea for the work, and helped me fix some details. Most feedback was that the pig snout was somewhat unclear and was hard to recognize what it was. So I tried to alter how the objects were arranged together.  ADAB was refined into a much larger scene to represent police brutality in a slightly more digestible way. I added multiple duck characters to this scene, with out main protestor who stands in a face off with a wall of police ducks. Most of my feedback was on clarity and to make sure that my message would get across well, so I tried to make sure that even small details were noticeable. I also wanted the style of the piece to seem somewhat cartoon like, so with my colouring I used very bright colours and added high contrast highlight and shading. So for my take of remix c...
